Birth Model Is Now Integrated with athenahealth

Prenatal records from athenahealth OB practices now connect to the delivery chart at the hospital or birth center. One structured record from the first prenatal visit to six months after delivery.

Two weeks ago we finished our athenahealth integration, and Birth Model is now live on the athenahealth Marketplace. It is the piece of our platform we have wanted longest, because it closes the gap that causes more lost context in maternal care than any other: the one between the office and the hospital.

Birth Model securely reads prenatal records from athenahealth OB practices and connects them to the patient’s delivery chart at the hospital or birth center. Every clinician, from the first prenatal visit through delivery and discharge, works from one continuous maternal record. Diagnoses and coding are written back to the chart.

Why This Matters

Pregnancy is one episode of care, but it is documented as three.

Prenatal visits happen in the practice EHR. Delivery happens at the hospital or birth center. Postpartum follow-up is scattered across both. Each handoff loses context, and the losses are always the same items: blood pressure trends, prior deliveries, labs, medications, and the risk factors the delivery team should know at admission and the outpatient team should know at discharge.

The same gaps drain revenue. Diagnoses documented carefully in one chart routinely never make it into coding in another. The gap is widest exactly where it is most common, which is when the OB practice and the delivery site run different systems. An athenahealth practice sending patients to a hospital on Epic or Oracle Health has no continuous record at all, only a fax and a phone call.

Birth Model bridges them. We link athenahealth practices to hospitals and birth centers regardless of what the delivery site runs, and we link delivery back to postpartum follow-up.

Not AI Alone

Worth being precise about how this works, because the market is full of claims that sound similar and are not.

Birth Model is a clinical decision support platform that organizes objective clinical data and maps it to each patient across the full episode. That structure is the foundation, and it is what makes everything built on top of it reliable. Coding, alerting, and documentation are accurate and consistent because they run against a structured longitudinal record rather than against a model asked to infer meaning from loose text. The result is an analytics platform for safety across the whole episode.

What Birth Model Does

Unified maternal chart

Prenatal records from your athenahealth practices assembled with delivery records from the hospital or birth center into one continuous record. Faxed and PDF lab results are parsed into structured fields rather than filed as images nobody reads.

Automated ICD-10 obstetric coding engine

More than 500 ICD-10 codes mapped, generated at the point of care, and filed to the chart automatically.

Birth Model Betty (Data Studio)

Plain-language analytics across your maternal population, powering real-time decisions on the floor, quality and safety review, and research.

Mobile safety notifications

Real-time alerts for severe hypertension, hemorrhage risk, critical labs, and labor arrest, delivered to the right clinician’s phone.

Delivery time prediction

Predicted delivery times help charge nurses optimize staffing and keep the unit prepared for what is coming.

Where Clinicians Feel It

The integration is not an abstraction. It shows up at six specific moments in the episode.

  • At prenatal and postpartum visits: The analytics platform surfaces problems and risk factors as they develop, especially for hemorrhage, depression, and hypertension, so they are caught before they become emergencies.
  • At admission: The delivery team opens one chart with the full prenatal story: blood pressure trends, labs, prior deliveries, and medications. No call to the office, no waiting on a fax.
  • During labor: The clinician covering the patient is alerted on their phone the moment something needs attention, so nothing waits for the next chart check.
  • While documenting: Diagnoses are surfaced and supported as care happens, so coding does not pile up at the end of a shift and coder queries drop.
  • At the postpartum visit: The practice sees the delivery course, complications, and discharge plan before the patient arrives, instead of reconstructing it from records requests.
  • Any time a question comes up: From a bedside question about the patient in front of you to a research query across years of deliveries, ask Betty in plain language and get an immediate answer. No report request, no analyst queue.

What Comes Next

If your practice runs athenahealth and you deliver at a hospital or birth center on any major system, the connection is available now. You can find our listing on the athenahealth Marketplace. Implementation is a read-only integration on the athenahealth side to start, with write-back of diagnoses and coding to the chart.

We are grateful to the athenahealth team and to the practices that worked through the build with us. This has been a long-standing request from the clinicians who use Birth Model, and it is the right foundation for what we are building next.
